Assessing Flammability with the Automatic Open Cup Flash Point Tester

Introduction
Flash point provides a key safety parameter for handling and storage of flammable liquids. Changsha Friend’s Automatic Open Cup Flash Point Tester standardizes the open‑cup method (ASTM D92/ISO 2592), automating ignition, detection, and reporting to improve repeatability and safety.

Testing Principle
A measured volume of liquid (e.g., 100 mL) is placed in an open brass cup heated at a controlled ramp rate (1–6 °C/min). An automatic ignition source orifice traverses the cup rim at defined intervals. An optical sensor detects the first flash of vapor ignition; the corresponding temperature is recorded as the flash point.

Technical Features

  • PID‑Controlled Heating: Maintains ramp accuracy within ±0.5 °C/min and setpoint stability of ±1 °C.

  • Automated Igniter: Spark or micro‑flame assembly synchronized with cup temperature and timing.

  • Optical Detection: Photodiode array senses light emission from the flash event, removing subjective judgment.

  • Safety Interlocks: Cup shield and emergency shut‑off mechanisms prevent accidental over‑heating or ignition hazards.

  • Digital Reporting: Generates time‑stamped, standard‑compliant flash‑point certificates for record keeping.

Industry Applications

  • Fuel Terminals: Classify gasoline, diesel, and kerosene for regulatory transport requirements.

  • Chemical Manufacturing: Test solvent blends, paint thinners, and process intermediates.

  • Lubricant Blends: Verify safe handling temperatures of base oils and additive formulations.

  • Aerospace Fluids: Ensure hydraulic and fuelling fluids meet stringent ignition‑temperature standards.

Best Practices

  1. Sample Clarification: Filter samples through 2 µm filters to remove solids that can create localized hotspots.

  2. Cup Maintenance: Clean the brass cup after each run to prevent residue affecting heat transfer.

  3. Igniter Inspection: Replace electrodes and ignition tips periodically according to usage cycles.

  4. Environmental Logging: Record ambient temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure as they can influence flash‑point readings.

We strive to create new management models and new products to meet the growing needs of customers.
